Our 21st Century Capital Campaign - 40th Anniversary of the Ordination of Women Priests
Who We Are
We are a community of many people who call the Advocate home. Some of us come for worship. Some come for social services. Some come to volunteer. Some come for events. Some are just connected. We are the Advocate.
Your Path to Partnership
Our greatest strength is in our partnerships that permit us to carry on this great work of nurturing, shepherding and educating. We are always seeking willing volunteers or those who will generously donate a portion of their resources so this work can continue, and never more so than now as we prepare for a Capital Campaign. The Campaign’s outcome will impact the Church of the Advocate and its community for generations.
The Church of the Advocate Celebrates the Philadelphia 11’s 40th Anniversary:
Help Us Now Continue Our Work of Social Transformation
Forty years ago, The George W. South Memorial Church of the Advocate, under the leadership of The Reverend Paul Washington, hosted the ordination to the Episcopal priesthood of a group of women now known as ‘The Philadelphia 11’. By 1974, the Advocate was the embodiment of hope as a leading participant in the struggle for human dignity. Today, very urgent needs outpace available resources, challenging the Advocate to be ever responsive to its mission: “To live the gospel of Christ and to serve as a welcoming community dedicated to spiritual enrichment, human services, community programs and the pursuit of social justice.”
Using the Celebration of the 40th Anniversary as a timely marker, the Advocate is exploring a capital campaign with two aims:
Financial contributions to fund the planning of a campaign, volunteers willing to assist with this initiative, and abundant prayers are urgently needed. If you can help, please use the contact form below. A representative from the Church will contact you shortly.

- to stabilize a rapidly deteriorating church structure and;
- to assure that basic needs of vulnerable residents in the surrounding community are met through mutual understanding, genuine partnership, and shared advocacy for a sustainable social transformation.
