                                Biography

The Very Rev. Renee McKenzie-Hayward, Ph.D.

Renee Eugenia McKenzie-Hayward was born and raised in Chester, PA. where she was baptized at Temple Baptist Church in 1968.  After attending Chester public schools she earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy from the University of PA.  Over the course of ensuing years she worked as a physical therapist in and around Philadelphia and New Jersey and eventually operated McKenzie Associates Physical Therapy before responding to a call to seminary.   She began her seminary education at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia in 1988 and transferred to Palmer Theological Seminary the following year where she received her Masters of Divinity three years later. In 1993 she enrolled at Temple University and completed a master’s degree (1996) and a doctorate degree (2005) in Religion.  She received a diploma in Anglican Studies from The General Theological Seminary in 2000.

In 2001 Renee was ordained into the diaconate and the priesthood by the Rt. Rev. David B. Joslin, the Assisting Bishop of the Diocese of New Jersey.  From 2001-2003 she was the Assistant Rector at Grace Church Haddonfield in the Diocese of NJ and in 2003 was called to the Diocese of PA to be the Rector of Calvary Episcopal Church, NL which later became Calvary St. Augustine Episcopal Church following a 2010 merger with St. Augustine’s Church of the Covenant.  In November 2011 she was appointed by The Rt. Rev. Charles Bennison, Jr. to serve as the Chaplain to Temple UNiversity and the Vicar at the Church of the Advocate.

Renee is presently the chairperson of the Antiracism Commission and was a 2009 Deputy to General Convention.  From 2006-2009 she served on the Board of the Lutheran Episcopal Campus Ministry at Temple University.

As an adjunct professor at Rutgers University, Temple University, Palmer Theological Seminary and The Lutheran Theological Seminary, Renee has taught classes on Black Church history, Racial Justice, Womanist Theology and Systematic Theology.  She is frequently invited to guest preach and serve as a retreat leader.

In 1985 she married Isaac Hayward with whom she has two children Idris, 26 and Tunisia 23.
